1. Sniper Elite VR
Sniper Elite VR takes Rebellion’s WW2 shooter VR Shooting Area series and translates it into an immersive experience that’s surprisingly fun. While it might not have the impressive realism of Boneworks, the game does work well with its sniping and infiltration missions (peppered in with a few action setpieces).
The controls are straightforward: analogue movement, grab to pick things up and the trigger to shoot. The game does a decent job of representing the time period with the appropriate weaponry and locations, and there are enough mission variations to keep it fresh.
Unfortunately, the rest of the experience feels like a missed opportunity. The lack of engagement when you’re not handling a sniper rifle is glaring, and the way that door handles, switches, satchel charges and the like are operated by reaching out your hand and holding a button until they unlock feels flat and breaks immersion.
The enemy AI is also easy to manipulate, which doesn’t help matters. It’s a shame, as the gameplay and visuals are so good when it is working. The blemishes are enough to stop it from standing out among more refined VR shooters.
2. Breachers
Breachers is an exciting and challenging tactical shooter that works on all major VR headsets. Its stunning visuals and smooth gameplay make it an excellent choice for anyone looking for a high-quality VR experience.
The game is based on the same premise as games like Counter-Strike or Rainbow Six Siege: you’re assigned to an attacking or defensive team and fight for control of key locations in an urban setting. Matches are divided into several rounds, with each round having a different scenario. Enforcers have to infiltrate the location, eliminate opponents and disarm bombs, while Revolters are responsible for defending the target and preventing the enforcers from disarming the bomb.
Both teams have access to a variety of weapons and gadgets, including pistols, shotguns, rifles, SMGs and sniper rifles that can be upgraded with exciting attachments. It’s also worth mentioning that you can spray breaching foam on walls or hatches to open new entrance points into the building. Just be aware that unlike other FPS games, headshots in Breachers don’t always kill enemies instantly, and damage is based on the type of weapon used.
3. Lies Beneath
While Oculus Quest owners have been left a little sulking after PC VR gamers enjoyed a trio of excellent creepy thrill rides in Boneworks, Saints and Sinners and Half-Life: Alyx, Drifter Entertainment (Gunheart and Robo Recall) has delivered an exquisitely unpleasant survival horror game for the platform.
Lies Beneath is a dark, claustrophobic and utterly nerve-wracking adventure where you play as Mae, a college student who returns to her hometown in Alaska only to be ripped from her father. Armed with a full arsenal of melee and ranged weapons, Mae must fight off hordes of monsters that lurk throughout the town.
The game is a throwback to the early 2000s, with an oddly janky pacing and a penchant for cheap scares, but it’s still effective. It also helps that it looks great, with Mae’s inner monologue conveyed via comic-style caption boxes and a cel-shaded art style that makes everything look like it’s straight out of a Tales from the Crypt issue. The level design is largely linear, but there are enough puzzles and boss battles to keep you busy in between runs.
5. Warhammer 40,000: Battle Sister
Warhammer 40,000: Battle Sister delivers a riveting VR experience for fans of the iconic sci-fi franchise. VR Standing Flight It does this by giving players the opportunity to embody a Sister of Battle, one of the all-female elite space nuns who fight for humanity in the dark reaches of the universe. Armed with bolters, chainswords and other powerful weapons, players must scour the galaxy in search of their missing twin sister, while fighting against the insidious forces of Chaos.
The fast-paced action gameplay is immersive and highly entertaining. Movement is fluid and there is a lot of scope for exploration, but at times the game feels confined to small halls and canyons. It also lacks the depth of character and narrative that other games in this list offer.
Nevertheless, despite its shortcomings, it still offers an enjoyable and entertaining shooter that can be played by gamers without a PHD in Warhammerology. The gunplay is excellent and dual-wielding weapons feels great. The constant emergence of different Chaos Marine classes, and the occasional beast, keeps combat feeling fresh and exciting. The ragdoll physics, and the game’s propensity to blow up or slash off heads and limbs depending on your weapon of choice, adds to its visceral impact.
